Best Places to Visit in Nantucket, A Dog-Friendly Travel Guide

Save for your summer vacation planning with your furry family member.

We know it can take a little, maybe a lot, more work to plan a trip with your pup. Dog In Room is dedicated to helping you make dog-friendly travel planning easier! Are you considering a trip to Nantucket Island? If you’re thinking about whether or not it’s worth it, first the answer is, a resounding YES! And second, the main attractions are all very dog-friendly, so your pup will enjoy their time too.

Best Places to Eat & Drink (plan around these, you’ll thank me later!):

  • Sandbar at Jettie’s Beach Bar & Restaurant – This place has the perfect beach bar setup for you and your pup. We’d honestly post up here the entire time, if we could, with a frozen cocktail in hand. Bring your pup, grab one of the colorful adirondack chairs, get a view of the Nantucket Sound, and soak in the sun.

  • Cisco Brewers – When visiting Nantucket, you have to check out the hugely popular beer brand’s founding spot that started it all! The brewery offers multiple food trucks, live music, and of course, their famous craft beers. They offer a complimentary shuttle service that runs on a constant loop from the corner of Federal and East Chestnut Street to the Brewery front entrance.

  • Cru – If your summer dreams are made of perfectly-shucked oysters paired with crisp white wine or rosé overlooking water views, this is the place for you. Not many fancy seafood places allow dogs on their patio but this exceptional place does! It was such a nice afternoon sipping bubbly with our pup watching yachts pull in and out of the harbor.

  • Bar Yoshi – This is one of our favorite eateries in historic Old South Wharf. Here you can get delicious sushi, poke, ceviche, and other Asian-inspired cuisine along with fun cocktails. The outdoor seating section is on a shell walkway so we recommend bringing a little mat for your pup for extra comfort.

  • B-ACK Yard BBQ – This place tops our list because of how dog-friendly the owner and staff are. While normally dogs are allowed on the patio (great spot for people watching as it’s a high traffic area where the ferries come in and out), there was very heavy rain when we got seated. The owner invited us and our pup inside to enjoy their delicious bbq during our first day!

Note: there are crowds during summer weekends so patio seating tends to be first come, first serve. Plan accordingly!

Dog-Friendly Activities:

  • Dog-friendly beaches – Nantucket’s beaches are absolutely gorgeous and while most beaches are dog-friendly in the off-season and outside of 9am-5pm, these are notably good for dogs during the summer: Nobadeer Beach, Dionis Beach, and Cisco Beach
  • Brant Point Lighthouse – iconic lighthouse with a dog-friendly sandy beach area
  • Tupancy Links is a 73 acre grassland with a not so secret off-leash area. Make sure to check out Something Natural, a sandwich shop nearby, for food and snacks as well!
  • Stroll the Siasconset, or ‘Sconset, Bluff Walk from the village to the Sankaty Head Lighthouse
  • Shop downtown – make sure to check out Pawsitively, where we picked out a beautiful, high quality leash, and the pet store Cold Noses to grab specialty dog treats
